Urban Dictionary defines mansplaining as such:
"to delighting in condescending, inaccurate explanations delivered with rock solid confidence of rightness and that slimy certainty that of course he is right, because he is the man in this conversation”
Personally, I’m not sure I buy any of the “Alfred Hitchcock: Rampant Chauvinist” theories - some paint him as a less than courteus character in regards to women (I guess we’ll hear more of this with the upcoming Tippi Hedren biopic, which I’m fairly curious to see in due time), others focus on his partnership with editor, writer and friend of the show Lady Alma Hitchcock née Reville, who Sir Alfred frequently consulted as far as moviemaking went.
Still, there’s no denying a huge amount of images portray him gesturing and pointing at stuff while in female company.
We don’t know whether Hitchcock actually indulged in some good ol’ mansplaining there, but it’s fun - for me - to imagine he was feeling compelled to enlighten the lady of the hour about some scenery, the ceiling, the distant future, how stuff works, and so on.
In case you can read Italian, I did a (serious) bit on the subject here.
thanks for watching
